We check in at Belfast International Airport for the early morning flight to London Gatwick. Join your luxury coach and board the ferry crossing to France. First stop is Lille Markets where the streets around the Grand Place and the Place Rihour become a riot of glittering lights crackling fires and traditional wooden chalets while the rich scents of gluhwein, cinnamon sweets and roasted almonds hang in the air. We continue to the 4 star Best Western Plus Hotel Alize in the centre of historical Mouscron, a perfect base for our tour.
After breakfast it’s time to enjoy the much-loved Bruges Christmas Markets. The town looks traditionally festive and Christmas stalls overflow with original present ideas from tasty handmade chocolates to wooden gifts and Christmas decorations – don’t forget to try a Belgian waffle smothered in whipped cream and hot syrup. We follow this with a trip to Ypres Christmas Market, – why not take a spin around the ice rink before browsing the stalls bursting with traditional crafts and unusual gifts, or explore the historic town, seeing St Martin’s Cathedral, rebuilt successfully after the first World War, and not forgetting the Menin Gate which lists the names of 54,896 British and Commonwealth soldiers reported missing in the Great War.
In the morning we’ll take in the family atmosphere at the Village de Noel laid out in the Grand Place Arras, an unexpected gem of a city – the main square is covered by a festive red carpet and surrounded by streets strung up with lights – for the young at heart there is a Ferris wheel, ice toboggan run and skating rink. Make sure you taste the mouth wateringly lush regional delights – cheese tarts and pies from the Vosges, all sorts of delicacies from the south of France including fabulous cold meats, cheeses, olives and tapenades. Let’s not forget the drinks, Normandy hot apple and pear cider, warm mulled wine and a huge variety of Cognac including salted caramel.
After breakfast there’ll be time to look around the charming city of Mouscron that prides itself on its architecture including St Bartholomew’s Church and the City Hall before boarding the coach back to Gatwick airport to catch our evening flight to Belfast International Airport.
