Staying at the Leonardo Hotel, Newcastle with a convenient city centre location and a short walk from all of the shops, bars and restaurants, just a 10 minutes’ walk from Eldon Square and The Gate shopping centres. During the tour visit the famous Beamish open air museum that at this time is wonderfully decorated to replicate the festive celebrations of bygone eras. Enjoy free time in Newcastle and Durham to explore the cities at leisure and all they have to offer this festive season. Take time to explore Newcastle’s Christmas Markets, grab a mulled wine and festive bratwurst before browsing the stalls to shop for Christmas gifts.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Meet your coach at your selected joining point and travel to Belfast for the early morning ferry crossing to Cairnryan. On arrival in Cairnryan, we continue our journey to Newcastle, stopping at the Caledonia Park Designer Outlet Village, Gretna Green for some free time before continuing the journey to arrive at your hotel late afternoon. Check-in, relax and freshen up before dinner.

DAY 2

After breakfast (departure time will be confirmed by your tour manager), spend the day in Newcastle. Known as a major shipbuilding and manufacturing hub during the industrial revolution Newcastle has become a centre for business, culture, arts and science. Meet your local guide for a guided tour by coach of the city who will show you the sites and tell the tales of Newcastle, famous for its industrial heritage, brown ale, and ‘Geordie’ dialect. Afterwards enjoy some free time to explore the city at leisure and visit the Christmas Markets which include an avenue of stalls along Grainger Street, the streets lining Grainger Market, the top of Grey Street, and Old Eldon Square. Take the opportunity to grab a mulled wine or a festive bratwurst before browsing the stalls to shop for Christmas gifts. Early evening return to your hotel for dinner.

DAY 3

Today after breakfast (departure time will be confirmed by your tour manager) join your coach as we travel to Beamish. Step into the past at Beamish a world-famous open-air museum, capturing the spirit of the Northeast in the 1800’s and 1900’s. Visitors to the museum meet costumed folk and discover fascinating stories of everyday life in the region through time. Attractions include restored tram and replica bus rides, old fashioned sweet shop, working farm, steam locomotives, go down the mine and much more. At this time of year, the museum is festively decorated so we can reimagine what Christmas was like in bygone eras. Mid-afternoon, re-join your coach and travel back to your hotel to relax before dinner.

DAY 4

This morning after breakfast (departure time will be confirmed by your tour manager) join your coach as we drive to the historic city of Durham. Well, known for its huge cathedral which is overlooking the rest of the city and its beautiful cityscape. This morning join, your guide for a walking tour of the city before spending the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city. Mid-afternoon, re-join your coach and travel back to your hotel to relax before dinner.

DAY 5

This morning after breakfast and checking out (departure time will be confirmed by your tour manager), enjoy some free time in Newcastle before we say goodbye to and make our way back to Cairnryan with comfort stops enroute to join the early evening ferry crossing to Belfast. On arrival, you return to your original joining point.
